Celebrate Culture Days in Timmins!

Welcome! This year marks the seventh year of Culture Days, a Canada-wide volunteer movement that raises the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. This is the fourth year organizations in Timmins are taking part in Culture Days with nine activities on schedule for September 30th, October 01st, and 02nd.

All activities are FREE.

Friday September 30th, 2016
ZUMBA TIMMINS INC. Open House 5:30pm to 6:15pm

Organization: ZUMBA Timmins Inc.

Location: École publique Lionel-Gauthier, 145 St-Jean Street

Enjoy an introduction to Zumba, where you will learn the basic steps of dances from around the world, including Merengue, Salsa, Cumbia, Reggaeton, Belly dancing, Hip-hop, Tango, Calypso, AND MORE! Feel free to stick around after the demo for a real Adult Zumba class at 6:30pm (ages 12 and up recommended, 10$ drop-in rate, or packages available).

Culture Days 2016: Welcoming Remarks 7:15pm to 7:30pm

Welcoming remarks and lead-in to Culture Days 2016 in Timmins. Some background about Culture Days and highlights for this year. Introduction to Steve Kessler and Friends.

Friday Night Live Jazz with Steve Kessler and Friends 7:30pm to 9:30pm

Organization: Steve Kessler (Independent Musician)

Location: Christopher’s Coffee House (35 Pine Street South)

Join Steve Kessler and Friends as they perform a live jazz ensemble at Christopher’s Coffee House. Feel free to ask questions between numbers.

Pottery Throwing and Wheel Demonstrations: 8:00am to 12:00pm

Organization: Wawaitin Clayworks

Location: Mountjoy Independent Farmers’ Market, Centennial Hall (814 Park Avenue)

Visit Wawaitin Clayworks at the Mountjoy Independent Farmers’ Market for their second Culture Days demonstration. Learn the steps involved in turning a one-pound lump of clay into a finished cup or bowl. Feel free to ask questions, too! Finished pottery will also be available for purchase.

Free Scottish Highland Dance Lesson! 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Organization: Northern Ontario School of Scottish Dance

Location: 425 Government Road South, Timmins, Ontario

Two 1-hour presentations regarding the introduction to Highland Dance and its history.
Hippie/Beatnik Poetry Café & Open Floor at the Timmins Public Library, with Guest M.C. Maggie Jasaitis (Ages 13+) 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Organizations: Timmins Public Library and Maggie Jasaitis (Independent Artist/Writer)

Location: Timmins Public Library, 320 2nd Avenue

Join the Timmins Public Library with special guest M.C. Maggie Jasaitis, a local artist, in a collaborative poem about what culture means to us. Share your writing or perform a song in the comforts of a beat-generation-styled haven right in our own library! Coffee, tea, and snacks will be provided. Note: Parents of teens under 18 wishing to participate are urged to use their discretion, as content may contain mature themes.

Stargazing & S’mores at Hersey Lake (Science Village if Overcast/Rainy) 7:30pm to 10:30pm

Organization: Science Timmins Astronomy Club
Location: Hersey Lake Conservation Area Beach
Overcast/Rainy Location: Science Village, 225 Fifth Avenue

Join members of the Science Timmins Astronomy Club for an evening of stargazing and s’mores at Hersey Lake! Telescopes and binoculars will be set up at the beach for viewing. Bring your own lawn chair and/or blankets. We will have a campfire for warmth and making s’mores (apples will also be provided for the health-conscious). If the weather is overcast or rainy, the event will be held in the planetarium of the Science Village on 225 Fifth Avenue.

Glassing Around (Ages 12+) 11:00am to 3:00pm

Organization: Tanya Thurston, Thurston Stained Glass

Location: 35 Father Costello Drive, Schumacher

Play with glass and go home with a memory. In just 4 hours you can make a lovely sun catcher to hang in your window and brag about to your friends! Please note: For safety reasons, participants must be a minimum of 12 years in age, and must wear closed-toe shoes. All other safety materials will be provided. This is a four-hour event with limited space. Please sign up in advance by phoning (705) 531-2928.

Sunday Open Studio and Panel Painting 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Organization: Porcupine Art Club
Location: Brick building Roy Nicholson Park (Intersection of Pine Street North & Eighth Avenue, Timmins.)

The Porcupine Art Club, founded in 1947, invites you to our studio to meet some local artist and see their works. You can also take part in creating a collaborative work of art. All ages welcome.

St. Matthew’s Open Windows 12:00pm to 4:00pm

Organization: St. Matthew’s Anglican Cathedral
Location: 331 Fifth Avenue, Timmins

St. Matthew’s Anglican Cathedral invites you to discover one
of the city’s hidden cultural treasures! The church is over 100 years old and its white stucco walls, green roof and crucifix-topped tower are a visible landmark on the Timmins skyline. Stop by to learn more about the heritage of this building and its unique collection of stained-glass windows. Enjoy the peace
that this space offers and take time for contemplation, rest and inspiration.
